Memorial Day Observances
Barnesville Memorial Day
Barnesville’s Annual Program will take place at 11:00 at the downtown Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. Barnesville’s Memorial Day Speaker is Lawrence C. Graham, III.
Graham, CW5 retired, US Army is a native of Cambridge where he grew up. He served a total of 32 years in the armed forces at the following assignments: Ft. Dix, Ft. Sill, Ft. Wolters, Ft. Rucker, Ft. Hood, and Heidelberg, Germany.
He served two tours in Vietnam, 1969 and 1970, and Desert Storm, 1991. During these tours, his primary duty was as a helicopter pilot and instructor pilot. He also served in various Battalion staff positions and as a company commander in Germany.
Service Awards received by the speaker include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, 32 Air Medals, 5 Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, the Liberation of Kuwait Medal, 3 National Defense Service Medals and various other service and campaign medals.
Following the program, members of the community are invited to lunch afterwards at the upper story banquet hall at the Legion on E. South Street.
Prior to the program, the Barnesville Elks Lodge will host its annual Memorial Day buffet style breakfast from 7:00 -10:00 at the lodge. The cost is $10 per person.
Another Barnesville Memorial Day observance took place mid-week at the Walton Home. “A very special thank you to Tim Snyder of the Bethesda First Christian Church for his Memorial Day service during this week’s Bible study. Tim does our weekly Bible study as well as our Church service one week each month.”
Area Services
Batesville Memorial Day. The Batesville American Legion’s Memorial Day parade will be on Monday Memorial Day at 10:00. The Batesville Auxiliary will be set up at the basketball courts at 9:00 selling homemade baked goods.
The Barnyard Bandits 4-H club will have a stand selling hot dogs, chips, lemonade, and beef sticks.
Those interested in participating in the parade please be in the parade line up by 9:30. Participants are asked to check in with Ladies Auxiliary member Linda Watson the morning of the parade.
Beallsville’s Program, sponsored by the Beallsville American Legion and Legion Auxiliary will take place on “traditional” Memorial Day, Thursday, May 30 at 11:00.
The Village of Belmont typically marks Memorial Day with a parade. In the past Lineup takes place at 9:00 at the old school stepping off at10:00 followed by a service will be at Post 312 (Tri-State Military Veterans Museum).
Bethesda’s Memorial Day Observance will include a parade and a program at the Municipal Plaza. The parade lineup in years past begins at 10:30 on Virginia Street followed by a parade through town beginning at 11:00.
In addition to the parade and program, the Bethesda VFD is sponsoring a Chicken BBQ. Serving begins at 11:00 at the fire station. Dinners consisting of half chicken, green beans, baked potato, roll and beverage is $13. A half-chicken only, $10. Call (740) 484-4573 to preorder.
