Dannie Bernard “Toot” Black

Dannie Bernard Black “Toot”, 66, of Salesville, passed away on February 7, 2025, at SEORMC surrounded by his loved ones. He was born February 2, 1959, in Cambridge, and was adopted by his parents, Bernard Allen and Vesta Mae (Van Fossen) Black.

Dannie grew up in Middlebourne with his parents and one sister, Debbie Black of Lore City. Some of his close family members were cousins, Karen Edmiston, Kevin Black and Brian Black of Mansfield, children of his late uncle John Black and late aunt Vivian (Redd) Black.

He leaves behind his loving wife of forty years, Crystal (Burga) Black, whom he married May 26, 1984, his daughter, Lacy (Brandon) Lowry, and one son, Dusty Black. He also leaves behind his two twin granddaughters that he adored, Lou Gene and Mae Lynn.

Dannie graduated from Zane Trace High School in 1977 and went to Belmont Technical School for Heavy Equipment training. He worked for Guernsey County, worked in the oil and gas industry, owned and operated his own backhoe and later retired from ODOT after 26 years. After retirement, he enjoyed helping family and friends with his backhoe. Dannie was in the FFA, OWE, 4-H, and played the drums in the band. He loved John Deere tractors, square dancing, motorcycles, and making new friends.
Two years ago, Dannie found his biological siblings. They got along so well and loved each other like they have known each other forever. They are Sina (Randy), Michael (Susan), Jesse, Victor, Fran, Rachel (Roy), Alice, Mickey, and Mary.

His in-laws that treated him like family from day one was the late Gene Burga and Alice (Christman) Burga, his brothers-in-law, Ron “Butch” (Jackie) Burga, Scott “Skeeter (Donna) Burga, Daniel “Moe” Burga, Tim (Pam) Burga, Tom (Diane) Burga, Rusty “Beve” Burga, and several nieces and nephews he enjoyed tormenting.

Dannie was a person who never met a stranger and if you were his friend, he would do anything for you. He had a heart of gold and always had a joke, story, or riddle to brighten your day. To know him was to love him. He will be sadly missed by everyone, including his dog, Maggie.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 12-5PM at Thorn Black Funeral Home in Quaker City with the service to immediately follow with Pastor Jeff Eschbaugh officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Gene and Alice Burga Scholarship Fund, C/O of Quaker City Citizen National Bank
