Riesbeck’s Reaches Century Mark
A two-day sale on Friday and Saturday officially marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first Riesbeck’s Market.
Margaret Schumacher Riesbeck, a widower, opened the first store, a corner grocery, in Woodsfield in 1925. Seven years later, the first Riesbeck’s Market was opened on Lewisville Road in the Monroe County seat, the first supermarket for the chain that today operates 17 stores throughout eastern Ohio and the West Virginia northern panhandle.
Riesbeck’s first market in Barnesville was located at 141 East Main Street. It was in operation during the 1940s and 1950s before closing.
The firm returned to Barnesville in 1972 when the current store opened at 1000 East Main Street. Since that time, the store has been expanded once.
