Barnesville Rotary Club News

Kathy Brown, Heather Eddy, Anne Ricci and Dee Phillips

February 18 – The program presenter at the meeting was Wheeling Health Right Executive Director Ann Ricci and Kathie Brown, outgoing director who is stepping down after 34 years of service with the organization. Club member Heather Eddy introduced the two.

Wheeling Health Right was established in 1985 by a group of concerned citizens, physicians and churches. It is a statewide free clinic in West Virginia that also covers Belmont County.

In our county, over 1,000 residents are served each year through funding provided by the county commissioners. Brown acknowledged though their support has not been consistent. Funding also comes from the state of West Virginia, private grants and donations.

Both speakers shared the need to get the message out that more funding in Ohio is needed to continue serving Belmont County.

More information can be found on the group’s website: wheelinghealthright.com

March 4: Member Adam Quirk introduced Kristi Sloan, Career Navigator for the Barnesville and Union Local school districts.  Future Plan Assessments are completed by students to help them to decide what pathways they will take in high school and beyond.  During high school, students need to make decisions based on their preferences, personality, and aptitude test results.  Assisting students during high school will hopefully help with choosing successful graduation pathways concerning careers.

Kristi helps to coordinate opportunities for students to explore college and/or trade school options, pre-apprenticeship and job shadowing options, etc.  Coaching in areas of assisting with career education, applications, and etiquette is helpful.  This service in high schools networks with businesses also for educating students to what is available in the fields they have interest and aptitude for. Success in career paths is the goal.
