Castello Wins Third Ohio Heifer Contest

Flatrock Road resident Elly Castello claimed the third Ohio Heifer Contest with her heifer “Sam” at the Ohio Beef Expo that took place at the Ohio State Fairgrounds March 13-16. Castello, along with her family and expo officials posed for this photo after claiming the title.    

Elly Castello, 21, of Barnesville, won the Simmental drive with her breeding heifer “Sam” at the 2025 Ohio Beef Expo in Columbus. Sam was then selected as the Third Overall Breeding Heifer that also included a cash prize of $600.

Castello who lives on her family farm, Flat Rock Farms/3E Farms, located between Barnesville and Somerton, is a 2022 graduate of Barnesville High School.

Since graduation, she continued her education becoming a certified Dog groomer, opening her own Business “Bark ‘n Buckle”.

Growing up, Elly was a member of the Country Sunshiners 4-H club. She now serves the club as a volunteer advisor. She also serves on the Belmont County Livestock Sale Committee.

Elly and Sam have enjoyed a great show year. They were named the Grand Champion Breeding Heifer at the AGR Holiday Classic and the Scarlet and Gray Midwest Showdown in addition to earning the Third Overall Breeding Heifer at the Ohio Beef Expo.

Looking forward, Castello is preparing for next year’s Ohio BEST show season.
