Darrel Edward Carruthers
Darrel Edward Carruthers passed away March 29, 2025, at the age of 78 at his home. He was born November 3, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Lithopolis, Ohio. He was a Presbyterian by faith.
He graduated from Bloom-Carroll High School in 1964 & attended Rio Grande College. He served in the U.S. Army as an air traffic controller. Later, he worked for Columbus & Southern and AEP and earned an associate degree in welding and fabrication management. He also graduated from Hobart Institute of Welding in Troy, Ohio, and became a certified welder. He later was in management at AEP.
Darrel enjoyed taking carpentry classes and making furniture. He took many different classes throughout the years. He was the family’s go-to guy, as he could fix or repair anything. He enjoyed working on his 1939 Plymouth over the many years.
After retiring, he started Belmont Home Improvement. One of his lifetime dreams was to build a house with a wrap-around porch. His dream came true when he came out of retirement to build such a house for his youngest daughter Jamie, son-in-law Brad, and their three children.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Carruthers & Viola (Dusenberry) Carruthers, his siblings: Donald, Judith DeLong, Bill & Tom. And his in-laws: Richard Blaine and Mary Martha (Lent) Chalfant.
Darrel is survived by his high school sweetheart Linda (Chalfant) Carruthers, whom he married in 1966. Their three daughters & sons-in-law he loved so much: Leslie Carruthers, Carrie Carruthers-Spung (Rich Spung) and Jamie Vinskovich (Brad Vinskovich). Five grandchildren who gave him so much joy: Liam, Reagan & Laken Vinskovich and Carter (Chloe) Spung and Taylor Spung; sister-in-law, Sandra Carruthers; and many nieces & nephews.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities – he loved them so much. Family was everything to him. We will miss him.
Calling hours and a service will be at Wilson Funeral Home (322 N Main St., Bethesda, OH 43719) on Friday, April 11, 2025 with calling hours from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The service follows immediately.
After the service we will gather at the fellowship room at Bethesda Christian Church (40601 Bethesda Belmont Rd., Bethesda, OH 43719).
