The Barnesville Shamrocks Softball team retained the Milk Pitcher defeating neighboring Union Local 18-2 in action on Monday, March 31.
Monday, March 31
Barnesville – 18, Union Local – 2
Chae Smolira hit two home runs and drove in four as Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks defeated Union Local 18-2 on Monday. Smolira homered in the fourth and first innings.
Union Local got on the board in the top of the first inning after A Kellaway singled down the right field line, and E Blakely walked, each scoring one run.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the first thanks to home runs by Payton Dudzik, and Smolira.
Seven more Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks runs crossed the plate in the third inning to extend the lead to 10-2. An error scored one run, Abigail Johnson grounded out, scoring two runs, Kylee Powell singled, scoring two runs, and Maddy Tyson hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs.
Eight more Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 18-2. An error scored one run, Lilly Welch laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, Dudzik singled, scoring two runs, Smolira hit an inside the park home run, scoring three runs, and Johnson singled, scoring one run.
Johnson earned the win for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. The reliever gave up one hit and zero runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one. Blakely took the loss for Union Local. The hurler went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits, striking out one and walking two. Peyton Loudin began the game for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. The hurler allowed one hit and two runs over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking six.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks piled up 12 hits in the game. Tyson, Smolira, Dudzik, Johnson, and Ella Betts each collected two hits for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. Dudzik stole two bases. Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks ran wild on the base paths, amassing five stolen bases for the game.
Kellaway and K Gallagher each collected one hit for Union Local. Blakely led Union Local with one run batted in. Union Local had patience at the plate, tallying seven walks for the game.
Tuesday, April 1
Wheeling Catholic Central – 4, Barnesville – 2
The ‘Rocks fell to Wheeling Catholic Central at the I-470 fields Tuesday by a score of 4-2.
The season record stands at 5-2.
Saturday, March 29
Barnesville – 10, Fort Frye – 2
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks won big over Fort Frye Varsity Cadets 10-2 on Saturday.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks jumped out to the lead in the top of the third inning after Chae Smolira homered to center field, scoring two runs, and Abigail Johnson singled, scoring one run.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks scored one run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to center field by Becklee Oliver.
Ella Betts earned the win for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. The starting pitcher allowed four hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking two. Taylor Hendershot took the loss for Fort Frye Varsity Cadets. The righty went seven innings, surrendering 10 runs (four earned) on 11 hits, striking out two and walking four. Johnson pitched two innings of scoreless ball for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks in relief. The righty gave up one hit, striking out two and walking none.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks accumulated 11 hits in the game. Smolira provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks with three runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-5 on the day. Smolira, Payton Dudzik, Johnson, and Betts each collected two hits for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. Betts stole two bases.
Hendershot led Fort Frye Varsity Cadets with two runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Carmen Henniger set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading Fort Frye Varsity Cadets with two hits in four at bats.
Saturday, March 29
Fort Frye –7, Barnesville – 6
A walk-off left Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks on the wrong end of a 7-6 defeat to Fort Frye Varsity Cadets on Saturday. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the eleventh when Carmen Henniger laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks lost despite out-hitting Fort Frye Varsity Cadets nine to seven. Chae Smolira led Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks with three hits.
Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks opened the scoring in the first after Ella Betts doubled, scoring two runs.
Fort Frye Varsity Cadets flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on two hits to take the lead, 5-2. The biggest blow in the inning was an error that drove in two.
An error extended the Fort Frye Varsity Cadets lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third inning.
Maddy Tyson homered to left field, which helped Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks tie the game at six in the top of the sixth.
Elle Casto earned the win for Fort Frye Varsity Cadets. The right-handed pitcher allowed nine hits and six runs (three earned) over 11 innings, striking out five and walking one. Betts took the loss for Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks. The reliever went 10 and one-third innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out five and walking two.
Betts provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Barnesville Varsity Shamrocks with two runs batted in. The infielder went 1-for-5 on the day.
Number seven hitter, Taylor Hendershot, showed the depth of Fort Frye Varsity Cadets’s lineup, by leading them with two hits in four at bats. Henniger, Jaden Cox, Hendershot, and Denay Layton each drove in one run for Fort Frye Varsity Cadets.
