Charlene N. Chumney

Charlene N. Chumney, 87, of Old Washington, passed away peacefully at the Kobacker Hospice House in Columbus, Ohio on May 13, 2025. Charlene was born in Dover, Ohio on January 25, 1938, to the late George and Dorothy (Dolvin) Aston. After graduating from Dover High School in 1956, she married her high school sweetheart Walter Chumney on February 2, 1958, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Winfield. During their almost 63 years of marriage, until Walter’s passing in 2021, they were blessed and raised four children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
In 1961, Charlene and Walter moved to a farm outside of Lore City where they worked on the farm, loved, and raised their family for 30 years. In addition to being a devoted farmer’s wife, Charlene was also active in the Old Washington United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Gibson Homemakers, and countless activities for the East Guernsey School District.
During their time together, Charlene and Walter were extremely active with the Old Washington United Methodist Church, not only as members, but as joint caretakers of the church for more than 20 years. Most recently, Charlene enjoyed her time attending, playing the piano/organ, and leading the children’s sermon and youth programs at the Middlebourne Community Church. She will be fondly remembered for her baking (for which she was well known), always having her camera or iPad at the ready for photographs, her passion for gardening, growing flowers, and being able to bring any plant back to life, her button collection, and the time spent with her family, friends, and her loyal dog Zoe.
In addition to numerous friends, she will be deeply missed by her family, including her children, Connie (Greg) Dunlap, of Cambridge, Bruce (Cynthia) Chumney, of Zanesville, and Andy (Jen) Chumney of Washington, PA; her grandchildren, Greg (Keleigh), Tim (Meghan), and Cassandra Chumney, Christian (Madison) Johnson, and Ava Chumney; her great-grandchildren Rowan and Baylor; her brother, Sam Aston; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Charlene was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Ann Chumney, and her brother, William (Bob) Aston.
Visitation will be at Bundy-Law Funeral Home on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Her service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., also at Bundy-Law, with Rev. Rodney King officiating. Burial will follow in Friends Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to either the Middlebourne Community Church, c/o Children’s Program, 21566 Bridgewater Road, Quaker City, Ohio 43773, or the Kobacker Hospice House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
