Patriotic Downtown Barnesville

(Barnesville Chamber photo)

This is the downtown Barnesville scene that will greet residents who attend the annual Memorial Day Program at Veterans’ Plaza at East Main and North Arch streets.

New this year are banners honoring area veterans of the armed forces, a project of the American Legion Riders, Barnesville Post #168. That group led the sponsorship drive to make the banners a reality.

They join hanging flower baskets and American flags on each decorative light in the central business district. These two projects are managed by the Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce. The sponsored basket program is spearheaded by Susan Lapham, owner of Avenues of Barnesville and the Blue Moon Tavern, while the flag project dates back several decades. That project was launched by the late Irene Cowgill (1927-2011) who was affectionately known as Barnesville American Flag Lady!
