Somerset Township Community Park to Receive Makeover

The Somerset Township Community Park will soon be home to an additional play area for younger children that includes climbing activities and learning games.

The Somerset Township Trustees want to bring an area to the park designed for younger children ages seven and under.

Right now, the park has a baseball field, a walking trail, horseshoe pits, outdoor bathrooms, two picnic shelters, monkey bars, swing sets, a slide, climbing dome, outdoor lifetime swings and a couple barbecue grills.

This new addition will bring climbing activities, slides and learning games. This area would also be a one-unit playground.

The trustees said there is a need for an area for younger children because for more than 25 years, the park has been designed for older youth.

The park receives no funding from the Belmont County Commissioners as it’s not in the park district. Therefore, the trustees are seeking financial support for the project. They are hoping to start it this summer and finish it by next year, depending on funds.

People can make monetary donations to the Somerset Township Trustees at 56783 Somerton Highway, Barnesville, Ohio, 43713. The park is located at 55260 Shry Rd. Barnesville.

The trustees have worked with Playtime for designing the play area according to Jeff Miller, township trustee. Miller described it as a “lifetime” playground.

The cost of the project will be around $30,000.

Miller said there are a lot of younger children that come to the park. He added it’s pretty isolated, which makes for a relaxing time for parents by letting people’s children enjoy themselves and not have to worry about traffic.

“I’m hoping to see the new structure be used,” Miller said. “There are a lot of young kids seven and under. That’s why we targeted that age group. And there’s a lot of single moms who bring their kids up by themselves and a lot of families that come up and walk. There are a lot of people in the summertime, they’re just here all the time. So it’s just an enjoyable place where you don’t have to really worry about what’s going on.”
