This was the two-story Fairview Schoolhouse, about 1910, that stood on Oxford Street. The building in the foreground was either the coal house, where the heat supply was stored, or the “privy,” where students and teachers took care of business.
According to the 1960 Guernsey Annual yearbook for most of the county’s school districts, students in Oxford Township including the towns of Fairview and Middlebourne were housed in a consolidated school building called Oxford Elementary. It was part of the Washington Local School District with a high school in Old Washington. At that time, there were 61 students in grades one through six.
Visible in the distance is the Methodist Episcopal Church steeple.
