One of the many murals along sides of downtown Barnesville structures is this gem painted by local artist Twila Fisher in 2020. Located on the west side of the water department office on East Church Street, this mural shares the history of the town’s first dedicated municipal building erected by the citizens of Barnesville and Warren Township in 1876 and it’s destruction by fire on July 8, 1896, when the volunteer firemen, shown in the center with their pumper affectionately called “Rough and Ready”, were able to save their engine but lost the building.
The current municipal building, erected after the fire, was designed by the Columbus firm of Yost and Packard. Yost also designed the county courthouse, sheriff’s residence and and children’s home, while Packard designed the First Presbyterian Church of Barnesville.
The Civil War monument, now located in the veterans plaza, stood in front of the municipal building from 1900-1914 when it was moved to Southern Cemetery.
