A Promise Kept

Barnesville Enterprise’s Jean Davies, (center) now retired, finally fulfilled a promise made to Barnesville Livestock Auction owner Darryl Watson. On August 9 prior to the weekly Saturday sale at the South Gardner Street auction house, Davies delivered a framed history of the business that dates to the 1940s.
Years ago while penning her “Jeanalities” column for the Enterprise, Davies wrote a column on the history of the auction and the old brick building that was constructed in the 1880s as the Barnesville Window Glass factory.
At the time of her column, one of the old brick walls had failed. With her sidekick historian driver, the late Bill Farson, they inspected the timber frame construction of the old factory and toured the building.
Davies, 98, now a resident of the Walton Home, said this week that the original history of the auction was researched and written by Rosie Fowler during her husband, Ted’s, ownership.
After a couple of moves, Davies said she lost track of the framed piece only to find it after she settled in at the Walton.
And, now, the history is where it was originally intended at 315 South Gardner Street.
