The Barnesville Rotary Club gathered at the corner of North Chestnut and East Walnut streets early Tuesday afternoon to dedicate a Peace Pole in the pocket park owned by Barnesville Veterinary Services.

The Barnesville pole joins more than 40 others in District #6690 of Rotary International and countless others throughout the nation and world as part of a Rotary education initiative.

During the program, former district governor and longtime active member of the Zanesville Rotary Club, Mary Jane Schackleford, shared information on the history of Peace Poles.

The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by Masahisa Goi, a 29-year-old man, who dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. Mr. Goi was greatly affected by the destruction caused by World War II and the atomic bombs which fell on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The Peace Pole Project was first introduced to the United States with the opening of The World Peace Prayer Society offices in San Francisco and New York in 1986, The International Year of Peace.

Peace Poles are now the most recognized international peace symbol and monument the world over with more than 200,000 Peace Poles standing in almost every country throughout the world.

“Musically inclined” members of the club lead the group singing the popular song “Give Peace a Chance,” while Melinda Thompson, current District deputy governor, and local president Mary Sidwell also provided remarks.
