Barnesville School Staff Recognized for Excellence

As the Barnesville School District’s staff returned to start the new school year, several teachers and classified staff were recognized for their excellence. When school ended last year, the administration met and selected a teacher of the year for each building. Each teacher of the year received a $500 cash award, provided by the Barnesville Area Education Foundation. High School Principal Ron Clark stated, “The awards are a wonderful way to highlight exemplary teachers and honor them in front of their peers.”
The Elementary Teacher of the Year is kindergarten teacher Julie Feldner. When asked about being the recipient, Mrs. Feldner said, “I was absolutely shocked! It was unexpected, but I am honored.” Mrs. Feldner has been a teacher in the district for 11 years, 7 years as a kindergarten teacher. She plans on purchasing resources for her room.
Intervention Specialist Lauren Blair received the Middle School Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Blair stated, “It is meaningful to me and unexpected since it was my first year.” Mrs. Blair continued, “The honor reinforced that I must be doing something good.” Mrs. Blair plans on purchasing school supplies, prizes for her prize cart, and snacks for her students.
The High School Teacher of the Year is librarian Lisa Gallagher, who is a 35-year veteran teacher. “I am grateful and humbled by this honor,” said Ms Gallagher. Her school principal, Mr. Ron Clark, commented, “Ms Gallagher has revolutionized our green period. She has created a warm, inclusive space for all students with her clubs.” Ms Gallagher added, “My focus is on students, their interests, and creating a positive learning and social environment.” Ms Gallagher will use her award money for library materials, such as puzzles, board games, and craft supplies.

Devin Blair is this year’s recipient of the George G. Skinner & Lela Skinner Bailey Teaching Development Award. This award recognizes teachers in the Barnesville School District who have performed above and beyond their responsibilities as educators, or have gone “The Extra Mile.” This award is in memory of George G. Skinner and Lela Bailey, who were both former teachers.
Devin Blair stated that this award “makes me want to continue building the music program.” The winner of this award receives a $2000 cash award for professional development and teaching needs. Mr Blair has bought used instruments for the 5th-grade beginners. He also intends to purchase instrument stands.

The Walter Skinner Service Excellence Award is to recognize classified employees of the Barnesville School District who have performed above and beyond their responsibilities, or have gone “The Extra Mile.” The recipient receives a $1000 cash award. This year, Joan Hamilton, who served the school district for 35 years as an instructional aide, is the recipient. This award is in memory of Walter Skinner, a former bus driver.
“The Extra Mile Awards are special because they come from your school community, including staff, parents, and community members,” commented Superintendent Micah Fuchs. Fuchs continued, “The awards are a reminder that those little extra efforts truly make a big difference.”
If you would like to nominate a Barnesville teacher or classified employee for the Extra Mile Awards, please complete the appropriate nomination form and submit it to the Barnesville Area Education Foundation, PO Box 1, Barnesville, Ohio 43713, by June 15 of the current school year.
