These two gentlemen attended the Tri-County Fair at Smyrna in 1913. They were likely photographed by a traveling photographer who would travel from fair to fair taking photos of attendees. Note the aero plane on the photo backdrop, a novelty at that time.
“The Tri-County Fair, slated for September 24-26 at the fairgrounds in Smyrna, will feature balloon ascensions Wednesday and Thursday afternoons”, was the report in the Barnesville Enterprise in 1940 that we repeat in this week’s Twice-Told Tales Redux.
The Tri-County Fair drew attendees from three counties – Harrison, Guernsey and Belmont. An independent fair, it was held up until World War II.
This fair was one of several held in the area. At one time fairs were also held in Barnesville, Belmont and Quaker City. Unlike Tri-County, these did not survive into the 20th century.
