Patriots Halt ‘Rocks Win Streak

A Barnesville fumble on the four yard line proved fatal Friday night before a packed crowd at Shamrock Stadium as visiting Charleston George Washington staged a come from behind 17-14 victory.
A single fourth quarter score, a Patriots 33-yard field goal by Teddy Smith, sealed the deal for the 5-0 West Virginia football powerhouse.
The game was tied at 14 in the final seconds of the third frame following a successful Patriots drive downfield capped by a PAT.
The host Shamrocks led at halftime 14-7.
With the loss, Barnesville will remain at 41 consecutive regular season victories, falling short of tying the former Sistersville High School Tigers’ win streak of 42. Steubenville High’s 68 game win streak continues to command first place.
Prior to last night, the last Barnesville loss came at the hands of the Shadyside Tigers in September 2021.
It will be a short week as the Shamrocks travel to Wheeling next Thursday night to take on the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights.
Wheeling will enter the game following a 41-8 victory Friday night over Pittsburgh Perry.
The Maroon Knights’ single loss came at the hands of Steubenville Catholic 48-0, while a narrow 25-19 win over Union Local, and easier wins over Fort Frye and Williamstown. They will come into the game with 4-1 record.
The Barnesville Dairy Queen Player of the Game was Trey Toliver with 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Rocks Pizza Shop Defensive Player of the Game was Hines Ford, whose dad graduated from George Washington High School.
All other area high schools fared better Friday night.
