This historic image of the Bethesda Christian Church was taken in the early 1900s. The date”1892″ printed in slate leaves no doubt of the construction date of the church building located at 407 S. Main Street in the village.
According to the church’s website, the congregation formed in 1869-70. Part of the Disciples of Christ until 1972 when the local congregation became self-governing, it was at that time the name was changed to South Main Street Church of Christ to differentiate it from another congregation on N. Main Street.
Ground was broken for the current building between CR 26 and SR 147 in 2010. When opened, the congregation name was changed back to Bethesda Christian Church.
The former church building on S. Main was sold to the Hillcrest Bible Church congregation that moved in shortly thereafter.
Hillcrest traces its roots to the group meeting in Belmont before renting the former Bethesda School wood-frame gymnasium located at 312 N. Main Street. The gym stood behind the old Bethesda Elementary School that was demolished after the high school closed in 1959 and students took over the newer structure located off of Maple Avenue. According to Google Maps, the gym, also now demolished, was still in place in 2015.
