Ten Years Ago – 2005
The new Save A Lot grocery store opened on the east side this morning. Scott Keich is manager of the store which he describes as “a new unique way to shop”.
Tickets are on sale for the Shamrock’s post season game against West Salem Northwestern High School. The game will take place Friday night at the BHS stadium.
Enterprise Halloween Contest winners Cori Medley, Juan Dunlap, Cara Singleton and Nathan Clark are profiled on page one.
Rev. Andrew Woods recently became A Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary International. He was presented the award by local president Ron Preston.
The Walter Thomas Store marks its 75th anniversary with a special sale now through November 12.
Twenty-five Year Ago – 1990
The Barnesville Development Council is within $15,000 of the goal to raise $110,000 by November 15 to purchase the Barnesville Depot, rail yard and right-of-way through the village. The parcel totals 42 acres.
Rehearsals for the Community Choir’s Christmas Concert begin this Sunday at the First United Methodist Church. Nancy Wildman directs the choir.
Deaths this week include retired dentist Dr. F. Reed Hasbrouck, 73, and Jean Graham, 76, widow of Howard (Jeevie) Graham.
The September 15 wedding of Wanda E. Carpenter and Thomas E. Brill is profiled.
Helen and Walter Hupp of Pigeon Point Road marked their 65th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
Retired minister, Rev. Ralph Geiger, is the new Enterprise correspondent for Belmont. His wife, Rev. Virginia Geiger, is minister of the Belmont United Methodist Church.
Fifty Years Ago – 1965
Mayor Victor Peddicord was an easy victor in his re-election bid for a 6th term. Dr. James McClure, William Doudna and Rev. Larry Miracle were selected as school board members.
In Warren Township, Donald Hunter and Hagar Myers were elected trustees.
The Barnesville Kiwanis Club served up 850 meals during the annual Pancake Day feed last week.
Tom Cheffy is winner of a National Association of Retail Druggists award.
Seventy-five Years Ago – 1940
The Grand Old Party opens two headquarters here as voters face the most important election since the Civil War. The Young Republicans and Republican Women are headquartered in the former Western Auto Supply store on West Main while the Republican Club has secured rooms over the Enterprise Office. Both will remain open afternoons and evenings until after the election.
The Democract Rally at the Community Center Monday night was well attended.
To comply with new Wage and Hour Law requirement limiting work to 40 hours a week, new banking hours will be observed by Barnesville financial institutions.
Somerton – The farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Warfield, located immediately west of town, was destroyed by fire last Wednesday afternoon. A few pieces of furniture were saved from the two-story structure which burned to the ground.
One Hundred Years Ago – 1915
From the Whetstone
Four hundred guests witnessed the brilliant wedding of Miss Emma Eliza Bradfield, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Bradfield, and Mr. Charles Atherton Bratton., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bratton of Fairview, at the First Presbyterian Church Thursday evening at 8 o’clock.
In the election, Barnesville elected the entire Republican ticket with the exception of Assessor, that position going to J.N. Kennon, a Democrat.
City voters approved a tax levy to construct a city water filtration plant by a two-to-one margin,.
The following Barnesville young men attended the Carlisle-West Virginia University football game at Wheeling Saturday: Forest Patterson, L.L. Hanlon, K.W. Miller, Gibson Bradfield, Harry Corbin, Louis Lindemuth and Clyde McClelland.
Girls wanted for our new factory addition at Harrison Brothers Shirt Factory. “We have positions for 50 girls, steady work and good wages in a warm, well lighted building”.
Wanted – stogie makers. Kildow and Lynn Cigar Company, Barnesville.
The first meeting of the Tourist Club for the season of 1915-1916 will be held at the home of Mrs. J.M. Jones, Friday afternoon at two o’clock.,
