Shamrocks Make it a ‘Cakewalk’ Over Portsmouth

Prior to the game, they were described as a team of big, powerful players who would test the ‘Rocks. In the end the Division V, Region 19 #4 team made it a “cakewalk,” easily overpowering #5 ranked Portsmouth Trojans, 34-0 before a hometown crowd at Shamrock Stadium.  Portsmouth ends the season, 8-4, while the 9-2 ‘Rocks move on to the semi-final game next Friday against #1 seed Wheelersburg.

It was the second consecutive 34-0 blowout by Barnesville. Two weeks ago, the Shamrocks rolled over neighboring Union Local by the same score.

The Trojans were penalized 15 times in the game; many hometown fans were shocked by the visiting team’s behavior throughout the night.

Trey Toliver was responsible for three of the team’s five touchdowns. He has scored 28 times so far this year.

The Shamrocks led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.  Kicker, Luis Garcia, perfectly placed the ball following the first two scores. On the third, the team failed to convert on a 2 point attempt.

Barnesville scored on the team’s first five drives. It was 27-0 at the half, Koby Jones making the fourth touchdown.

Backup quarterback Evan Wells capped off scoring in the third frame when at 7:46, the ‘Rocks led 34-0, kicking off “running clock” play.

Two Shamrocks broke school records in the game. Junior Toliver became the school’s all-time rushing leader, besting the record of Mat Bettinazzi. Senior Hines Ford broke school’s tackle record previously held by Danny Spiczenski.

The Barnesville Dairy Queen Player of the Game was Trey Toliver and the Guernsey-Muskingum “Power Lineman” of the Game was Dillon Lucas.

Earlier in the week, Koby Jones was named the WTOV DeFelice Brothers Pizza Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Ohio Hills Health Center provided the team’s pre-game meal, while the Barnesville Dairy Queen provided the post-game meal.
