Ten Years Ago – 2005

Barnesville and the medical community of Eastern Ohio mourns the passing of Wesley Alan Childs, MD, who died November 17 at the age of 90.

The Jerusalem United Methodist Church was destroyed by fire last Wednesday morning. Beallsville, Somerton and Woodsfield departments responded to the fire. The church located along SR 147 was originally home to the Presbyterian congregation.

Glady M. Hall Ball, 83, of Leatherwood Road, died Tuesday at Barnesville Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carpenter of Barnesville will mark their 40th wedding anniversary on the 27th. She is the former Linda Swallie.

Twenty-five Year Ago – 1990

The fund drive to purchase the railroad depot and grounds now tops $23,000, $8,000 of that for the second payment of $55,000 to secure the building.

Barnesville Hospital has been awarded full accreditation by the nation’s most prestigious quality review organization – the Joint Commission of Health Care Organizations of Chicago made the announcement this week.

Village Council gives shoppers an early Christmas present – free street parking through December 25.

The East Church Street Apartments, originally constructed in 1923 as the Barnesville Hotel, have been purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lemasters.

Ed and Ruth Ridgeway of Bethesda mark their golden wedding anniversary with an open house on December 2.

Jean Davies provides details of the capture of Rocky the Raccoon who took up residence in the 100-year-old Enterprise building recently. Howard Lemasters of the Belmont County Rescue League captured Rocky and transported him to his new home on Leatherwood Road.

Fifty Years Ago – 1965

A new $8-million Hanna Coal Shovel, the “Silver Spade” will be unveiled to the public near Cadiz this Saturday afternoon.

The State Theater is reopening this weekend for the winter season. The opening presentation will star John Wayne and Dean Martin in ‘The Sons of Katie Elder.”

Paul Livezey is re-elected as a director of the Federal Land Association stockholder meeting in Minerva.

Miss Alice Watt, head librarian of the Barnesville Public Library for the past 16 years, tenders her resignation effective Jan. 1.

School officials expect over 1,500 on hand for the ground breaking of the Ohio University Branch at East Richland Monday morning.

The Assumption Church was the November 18 scene of the pretty marriage of Miss Patty Froehlich and Mr. Bill Young.

Seventy-five Years Ago – 1940

Joseph Jones and James Hackett of Barnesville and Robert Kennedy of Bethesda are the first three local men called up in the nation’s first peace time draft.

A torchlight parade will open the Christmas Season in Barnesville on Friday night. Nine bands have been invited to participate. Many merchants and churches plan to enter floats in the parade.

The fourth major fire in downtown Woodsfield in the past five months Thursday caused an estimated $60,000 damages as an entire business block burned to the ground. Taken out were the Columbia Hotel, Taylor Confectionary, Ben Franklin Store, DeLong Shoe Repair and Terminal Confectionary long known as Bertrams. The block consisted of buildings on the southeast side of the Square.

One Hundred Years Ago – 1915


From the Whetstone

Concerning the location of the Eastern Ohio Normal School, there is nothing definite to say at this time. The commission held a meeting at the Neil House last evening, but it is said that they would make no public statement prior to submitting their report to the governor on Dec. 1

.
While attempting to locate a gas leak at his place of business at the corner of E. Walnut and Church, last week, E. Williams, proprietor of the Purity Dairy, met with a painful accident. While checking a leaking gas pipe in the cellar with a match, an explosion occurred knocking out several windows and burning Williams about the face and hands.

While moving our newspaper office this week, we unearthed several old issues of The Whetstone dating to 1899. Our office is now located in the Kennard Garage Building, second floor, on N. Chestnut Street.

The Woodsfield High football team is scheduled for a game with the local team at the fair grounds Thursday afternoon, Thanksgiving Day. The game will no doubt be well attended.
