In this week’s Twice-Told Tales, we read that the current Assumption of the Virgin Mary Catholic Church structure was dedicated on Nov. 25, 1915, 110 years ago.
The new brick church was a necessity. The former parish church that faced S. Gardner Street, was destroyed by fire following Christmas Morning Mass on Dec. 25, 1914.
The old frame church got its start in 1859 at the corner of Chestnut and Church streets as home for the First Presbyterian congregation. When the Presbyterians started construction of their current historic gothic-revival church in 1901, the parish purchased the old church, moved it to the church church lot and expanded it. A photo of the building expansion project is found on page 49 of Barnesville’s 200 Years: A Pictorial History.
