Ten Years Ago – 2005
Fire last Thursday destroyed the frame residence at 402 W. Main. An electrical short was determined the cause of the fire.
The Chamber of Commerce will again this year offer horse and wagon rides originating from the historic B & O Depot.
Bids ranging from $268,000 to $349,000 are received to repair the slip on Railroad Street. The State of Ohio will pay a major portion of the expense.
The 2005 Barnesville Snow Queen is Miss Tiara Morris.
For a second year running, Wesbanco Barnesville will present its second “after hours” holiday party at the main office 101 E. Main, the evening of December 15.
Twenty-five Year Ago – 1990
Barnesville friends and neighbors have come to the aid of Mary and Orlin Thornberry who have both had serious surgeries in recent months.
Village council votes a 60-cent an hour pay raise for town employees.
Matt Powell, BHS all-time basketball scoring leader, signs for southern Ohio’s Rio Grande College. He will play for the Redmen next year.
The Batesville United Methodist Church will mark the current church building’s centennial at special services on December 16. Construction of the church, dedicated on December 14, 1890 was financed through First National Bank of Barnesville.
This week’s business profile features Roe’s Store at 114 W. Main, a downtown fixture since 1945. Helen Roe Watson owns and manages the business.
Fifty Years Ago – 1965
Preliminary sketches of the proposed Hutton Memorial Library were shared with library trustees this week. The building will be 120-feet long, 70-feet deep.
Doan Ford has taken an option on 30 acres of land across from Union Local High School as a site for a new Ford dealership serving the Barnesville and St. Clairsville communities.
An open house tonight, Thursday, December 9, will mark the Centennial of First National Bank.
Four seniors are inducted into the National Honor Society. They are: Martha Atkinson, Diane Froehlich, Judy Bailey and Emery Stewart.
First place and a $15 award for the commercial float division of Saturday’s Chamber-sponsored Christmas Parade went to Belmont Manufacturing/Jonathan Logan.
Santa made his grand entrance to the village Saturday by landing his sleigh on the roof of the high school gymnasium roof. He then climbed down the fire department ladder to the street. His team of reindeer remained on the roof during the visit!
Seventy-five Years Ago – 1940
Despite unfavorable weather thousands jammed the downtown streets Friday night to witness the annual Christmas parade sponsored by the Better Business Bureau. The Main Street Methodist and Presbyterian churches floats took top honors.
The new skating rink destined to become “a mecca for skaters” opens Saturday at 142 South Chestnut Street. Hardwood floors have been installed, walls painted and repaired and a “false celotex ceiling” installed in advance of the opening.
A chorus of 150 voices will present the community Cantata Sunday afternoon at the First Methodist Church.
William Smith of Morgantown Avenue is appointed to fill the unexpired term of village weighmaster by city council.
The annual Farmer’s Institute will open Friday evening for two days and three sessions at Belmont Grange Hall.
A new 1941 DeSoto model is on display at Henry Motor Sales on Morristown Street in Flushing.
One Hundred Years Ago – 1915

At the congregational meeting of the First Presbyterian Church, an official call was extended to Rev. John W. Claudy of Pittburgh to become pastor of the church.
After so long a time, the company operating the local telephone exchange has issued a new directory of subscribers.
The Ohio Women’s Christian Temperance Union organized a youth YPB Club at Bethesda Friday with 50 charter members.
Mr. Samuel Dewees and wife will leave Friday for Philadelphia where they will make their future home. They have lived on Sandy Ridge for years.
