Bequeath Will Fund Vo-Ag and Trades Scholarships
On January 2, 2019, 1954 BHS graduate, John H. Borton, died at the age of 82. His will directed his property in Oxford Township, Guernsey County be sold and the proceeds split between the Barnesville Area Education Foundation and the East Guernsey School District.
Borton never married and had no direct descendants. Once the will was read, it was contested by a relative thus beginning a multi-year legal battle over control over the property.
Three years ago, a court decision favored the educational parties. That was subsequently upheld on appeal allowing the property to be surveyed and readied for sale.
An auction took place for the three Guernsey County parcels on September 20, with the proceeds split between the East Guernsey School District and the Barnesville Area Education Foundation, each receiving about $362,000.
Borton’s will directed it be used to fund scholarships aimed at students pursuing higher education in Vocational Agriculture and Trades.
