Barnesville Native, Son are Nationally Ranked Tennis Doubles Team
DUBLIN, OH – Barnesville native, Shane Thornton, and his son, Conner, of Dublin, are currently ranked 11th in the nation in Father/Son Doubles for the Unites States Tennis Association.
They have competed in tournaments in Rhode Island, Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago and La Jolla, CA.
The younger Thornton is an online student at Columbus Academy High School which allows him to play sanctioned tournaments.
When not competing on the court, Shane is administrator for Columbus Skin Surgery practice where his wife is a surgeon. A 1989 graduate of Barnesville High School, he has played sanctioned tennis since the age of eight.
During Shane’s high school years, he was the sole member of the BHS Tennis Team. Dave Johnson, Shamrock athletic director at that time, served as his coach all four years.
While Barnesville no longer fields a tennis team, several area schools do, including Zanesville, Wheeling Central, Wheeling Park, New Philadelphia, Cambridge and St. Clairsville.
Jon Thonton of Barnesville, who is the proud father and grandfather of the duo, has long championed tennis in the Barnesville community. Each July during the Independence Day celebration, he stages a tennis and table tennis tournament at Barnesville Memorial Park. In recent years, he added pickleball to event.
