Help Belts Available for Barnesville School Families

Through a grant from the Barnesville Area Education Foundation, the Barnesville School District purchased 100 Help Belts, which are available to Barnesville students and their families. In the event of a car accident where the driver becomes injured, the Help Belt notifies first responders of an individual’s potential inability to communicate verbally or follow the directions of first responders.

The Help Belt is a soft, padded seat belt cover. The Help Belt includes a form that allows individuals to create a personalized medical information sheet with emergency contacts and is stored in a clear view pocket of the seat belt cover. The outside of the cover communicates to first responders to use “caution” and refer them to the additional information if necessary.

Help Belts are not just for nonverbal students. Vicki Klatt, Barnesville’s school psychologist, stated, “We also have many students who suffer from anxiety and would need extra care or consideration when facing a stressful situation.”

Please contact the Barnesville Special Education Department at 740-425-3639 ext. 3222 if you have any questions about the Help Belts or would like to request one for your family.
