Taking a Plunge

As one year ends and another begins many Americans participate in January 1st “Polar Bear Plunges” by jumping into frigid bodies of water.

Barnesville’s Rotary Park Lake at Memorial Park saw a modified version of that last Friday night.

“Barnesville Police received a call at approximately 5:37 PM with regards to a vehicle on its roof in the park lake. Upon arriving on scene, police were able to confirm the vehicle was unoccupied and began investigating and searching the area,” said Police Chief Rocky Sirianni.

“The call came in from people out walking the park trail. They noticed taillights in a weird position,” reported the Facebook page ‘Ohio Valley Sirens and Shenanigans’ whose moderator monitors police, fire and emergency radio transmissions.

In less than a half hour, the vehicle owner as well as the driver arrived in another vehicle, the driver stating he walked home after driving into the water.

“Evidence located inside the vehicle as well as other indicators led police to believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the incident,” Sirianni said.

The 33-year-old driver was transported to the Barnesville Police Department and was ultimately issued a citation into Western Division Court for OVI, according to the police chief.

Barnesville Fire and EMS were on the scene with their boat, but it was not needed. The Belmont County Emergency Management Agency was also notified.

Hissom’s Service Center tow truck removed the vehicle from the lake.
