Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to Cease Publication
PITTSBURGH – Multiple media sources, regional and national, reported the news Wednesday that the owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette would cease publication Sunday, May 3rd.
The Post-Gazette, established in 1786, is the oldest newspaper west of the Allegheny Mountains that has played a significant role in the history of Pittsburgh and American journalism.
Pittsburgh, like many major U.S. cities, was home to multiple daily newspapers up through 1992 when the competing Pittsburgh Press ceased publication.
The Block family of Pittsburgh and Toledo, publishers of the Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade, have long battled local unions in the Steel City over pay and benefits.
A lengthy strike by staff writers that began in 2022 ended in November. A court order in favor of the workers was appealed by the owners. That appeal was turned down by the U.S. Supreme court on January 6. The following day the owners announced the newspaper’s closure citing losses of over $350 million in the past two decades.
The Post-Gazette ended daily print publication in 2018 and had cut down to two print editions per week (Sunday and Thursday), going online-only the rest of the week.
Over 3,200 daily and weekly newspapers have ceased publication in the last 20 years.
In the iron and steel region, Pittsburgh will become the second city to lose its hometown newspaper.
In 2019, the owners of the Youngstown Vindicator folded that city’s newspaper. While the free-standing newspaper disappeared, the nearby Warren Tribune Chronicle, owned by the Wheeling-based Ogden newspaper chain, purchased the name and subscriber list, resulting in today’s Vindicator newspaper replacement.
With the loss of the Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh will become the largest city in the nation without a newspaper.
