At last week’s Barnesville Village Council meeting, members approved a permit to build a commercial building, office and apartment at the corner of Mulberry Street and Watt Avenue.
It is interesting that the only other structure that stood on that site was also commercial, a warehouse that was served by an adjacent railroad spur used to to deliver goods to the company.
The building shown was erected by the McClelland-Kennard Grocery chain, or M-K Company, in 1916 as the firm’s office and warehouse.
In 1937 when the M-K Company moved to its new expansive warehouse at the corner of Mill and South Chestnut streets, this building was sold to the neighboring United Dairy.
It served as a warehouse for condensed milk manufactured at the dairy until the plant was shuttered by the firm in 1981.
An interesting tidbit of history on this site. During its days with the United Daily, a second story enclosed walkway over Watt Avenue connected the factory and and warehouse.
