Hines Headed to State

MENTOR – BHS frosh wrestler Ladyn Hines continues to make history.

She claimed the District Crown for the 115-lb. class Sunday at Mentor setting her up as the Shamrocks’s first female competitor at the state tournament this coming weekend in Columbus.

Hines was one of six OVAC female competitors on the district level and one of two to win their weight class. The other was Steubenville Big Red’s Talea Guntrum who won the 135-lb division.

In January, Hines won the OVAC Girls’ Title as the Shamrock’s only female wrestler.

In the 72 years since the first OVAC tournament, now Ron Mauck OVAC Tournament, this was the first year females competed. A total of 95 girls entered the contest, including Barnesville’s lone entrant, freshman Ladyn Hines, who won the 120-pound weight class crown in a 9-0 decision over Zenfira Spencer of Edison.

On February 8, Hines won the Maysville Panther Middle School Invitational in the 115-lb. division. She won all five of her matches to claim the crown with a 5-0 record.

The following week she exceled at the Leilah Castro Invitational at New Lexington High School Friday. She was also named the Most Valuable Wrestler in the high school division at that contest.

Like the boys, the top four finishers in each weight class move on to the state tournament this weekend at the Value City Arena in The Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center. The three-day contest gets underway Friday and runs through Sunday.
