BHS Announces Class of 2026 Latin Honors
The Barnesville High School Class of 2026 is the first graduating class to receive Latin honors instead of the traditional valedictorian and salutatorian honors. The decision to move away from class rank was made when Angela Hannahs was still Barnesville’s superintendent, and the class of 2026 students were entering high school as freshmen. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), “more than half of all high schools no longer report student rankings.”
There are many reasons to move away from class ranks. Rank can be misinterpreted, and students may avoid challenging classes that might impact their class rank. Superintendent Micah Fuchs shared that class rank can impact students’ mental health. The Latin honors system “takes the pressure off of one person,” stated Fuchs.
High School Principal Ron Clark added, “The Latin honor system gives us the opportunity to recognize our students who take academic risks by taking advanced and college classes.” Colleges are forced to look closer at the rigor of the student’s courses, test scores (ACT/SAT) and student achievement.
For graduation, there will be three speakers: the class president and two students selected from the pool of Summa Cum Laude students. The Summa Cum Laude students wanting to speak will be placed on a ballot, with the Summa Cum Laude students voting. Congratulations to these Barnesville Seniors for their academic achievements.
