Enterprise Album

Thanks to expert sleuthing by Barnesville native Malcom Spence, this week’s Enterprise Album features the former Helen Barnes store in Malaga.

The pre-Civil War building stood on the southwest corner of SR 800 and SR 145 until a few years ago.

Barnes, who never married, died in 2001 at the age of 97. The store was in the corner room of the structure. The building also served as her residence.

Spence found a photo online that is part of a national archival collection of historical and contemporary photographs.

The photo is titled “The Working Day Begins” and is described as follows:

Workers sitting outside a store as they wait for a bus in an unspecified small town, Ohio, circa 1955. The products advertised outside the store are ‘Royal Crown Cola’, ‘Kool’ cigarettes, ‘Philip Morris’ cigarettes, and ‘Camel’ cigarettes, with a sign for ‘Damsel’s Ice Cream’ in the window.

The bus would be the Red Star Bus that served Woodsfield, Malaga, Somerton and Barnesville.

The original photo may be viewed online here.

Barnes is buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery in Malaga. An inscription on her stone reads “A loved and respected lifetime resident of the Malaga community.” (Image – Find a Grave)
