Underground Railroad Museum Receives Grant

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AVC News) — Several organizations in Muskingum and Belmont counties are among the recipients of more than $32,000 awarded this year by the African American Community Fund in partnership with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
Enterprise Muskingum received support to help cover operational expenses and to fund the Beautiful Mom Cohort, which works to empower local mothers. The Nelson T. Gant Foundation, also in Muskingum County, was awarded funding to support the creation of a bronze statue of Gant as part of the new Nelson T. Gant Freedom Walkway.
In Belmont County, the Underground Railroad Museum will receive funding for its first Flight to Freedom Adventure Race, a triathlon designed to raise awareness of the region’s historic ties to the Underground Railroad.
Warriors 2 Wilderness, another Muskingum County–based group, was also selected for a grant to support therapeutic retreats for African American veterans with PTSD.
In total, 17 projects across Appalachian Ohio received funding through AACF’s endowment fund, which reinvests charitable gifts to advance opportunities in education, health, arts, culture and community development.
AACF was established in 2020 and is one of 15 affiliate foundation partners with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
