Upcoming Christmas Activities

Yes, in just 11 days it will be Christmas 2024!  A Barnesville Christmas is complete without the “Leg Lamp” shining forth from the second story apartment window of Corner Pharmacy at 102 West Main Street.  Earlier this week, owner Chip Terrett announced “the lamp is officially up and, in the window, above Corner Pharmacy. Enjoy, sorry we were a little late this year.”

The lamp’s presence was lauded on social media by many including one area resident who posted,

“I just passed through town coming home and I am happy to see that the leg lamp is now up. I can now get into the Christmas spirit! Thank you to whoever displays it every year. It is a big deal to our family and possibly everyone else….feeling festive”.

For “A Christmas Story” movie devotees, the movie will be shown at Wheeling’s Capital Theater Sunday, December 22 as “An Evening with Peter Billingsly & A Christmas Story”.  Saturday morning there were less than 100 tickets remaining in the 2,300-seat movie house.

The evening will include a screening of the 1983 film and a moderated Q&A where Peter Billingsley who played Ralphie Parker in the movie class.

Billingsly will share stories from the movie set, behind-the-scenes photos, and memories from the Christmas classic. Audience questions are encouraged, and the screening will feature a Toy for Tots fundraiser, and a leg lamp giveaway to one lucky winner. For those looking for an extra-special experience, a limited number of VIP tickets will be available which include a personal pre-show photo opportunity with Billingsley.

Santa Claus is pictured at the wheel and joined by sidekick, The Grinch on the historic Bethesda fire truck. 

Folks in Bethesda gathered at the Community Room on Friday,, December 13  for a sing along, enjoying cocoa, coffee and cookies. Photos with Santa on the old fire truck were also  slated to take place at Municipal Plaza. 

Barnesville Community Food Drive

The Barnesville Middle School Student Council is teaming up with the Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce to collect food for the Barnesville Thrift Store through December 30. Nonperishable food items may be dropped off at Village Hardware and Rental.

The second annual Christmas in the Park display at Barnesville Memorial Park features 40 displays. It will run each evening now through Thursday, January 2,

While traveling through Barnesville Memorial Park, turn your radio to 88.5 for recorded Holiday Music. 

Flushing Best Decorated Residence Contest

The Flushing Revitalization and Business Corp. is re-introducing the “Best Decorated Residence” contest this year. Judging will take place Sunday, December 22.  The winner will receive a $50 award.  

    

Christmas Movie Night – December 15

The Union Local Alumni Association presents “Christmas Movie Night” featuring the movie “Elf” at the Middle School Auditorium, Sunday, December 15. The doors open at 4:00. The event includedes a special preformance by the UL Choir and members of the cast of the high school musical, “Elf, Jr.!” Admission of $5 includes popcorn and a drink.

UL Jets Holiday Wrapping Service – December 15

The Union Local Student Council will offer gift wrapping services to the public on Sunday, December 15 from 1:00-5:00 at the school’s Commons.  Payment is by donation with a $10 minimum contribution recommended.  “Bring your own wrapping paper or choose from our selections.”

Astoria Place Open House – December 18

Join family and friends for an Open House at Astoria Place Barnesville, Carrie Avenue, on Wednesday, December 18 from 1:00-4:00.  Hors d’oevres and punch provided. Special Christmas Music by Mindy Wilson at 2:00

Barnesville Bands/Choirs Concert – December 18

The free event will take place at the BHS Auditorium, Wednesday, December 18, beginning at 7:00.

  • High School Chamber Band
  • 5th Grade Choir
  • 6th and 7th Grade Choir
  • High School Chamber Choir

State Theater “Winter Frost Gala” – December 20

Featuring the Ron Retzer Trio, enjoy an evening of winter cheer while supporting the Barnesville State Theater Restoration Project. The event will take place in the Barnesville Elks Ballroom, 6:30-9:30. The cost is $30 per person which includes dinner, cash bar, show.  Semi-formal attire. 

The evening includes Cocktails, 6:30 (cash bar), Dinner, 7:00, Music 8:00-9:30.

TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED IN ADVANCE. Private Message at the group’s Facebook Page and someone contact you to arrange ticket purchase. 

UL Free New Year’s Day Meal– January 1

Once again, this community service is presented by the Union Local High School Marching Band.  “Do you know someone in the Union Local School District who needs a warm delicious meal and a little kindness to start the new year?”

The meal will consist of pork roast tenderloin, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, roll and light dessert. 

 Meals will be delivered between 12:00 and 4:00 Wednesday, January 1. 

Plans are to prepare 350 meals.   Meals are free to participants thanks to generous sponsors and fundraising efforts for band equipment by Christmas Day.  Suggested donation is $20 per meal with a goal of $7,000 to cover the costs.
