On December 22, 1960 Barnesville experienced it’s second most destructive business district fire when the J.C. Penney’s Store was gutted. It was a very frigid night when over two dozen area fire departments battled the fire.

The business next door, T & A Rogers Hardware did not burn but there was heat and smoke damage throughout. In this Barnesville Enterprise photo, hardware store owner Tom Robinson showed his son, Greg Robinson, a box of damaged shotgun shells. The company sold guns and ammo. Bullets went off throughout the night. Luckily no one was injured.
