High School Football Playoffs
Union Local Advances, Barnesville Enters Fray Friday Night
Union Local and Barnesville are both competing in post season play in Ohio Division V, Region 19.
Number #11 ranked Union Local did it a second year running last night beating a higher ranked and favored school in the state playoffs.
In Columbus, the Jets beat the #6 ranked Columbus Africentric Nubians, 32-12, overcoming a half time deficit of of five, 12-7.
Next Friday night, the Jets travel to Athens County to take on #3 ranked and undefeated Nelsonville-York, a team that sat out the first week of the playoff action with a “bye”.
Barnesville the Number #4 ranked team also received a “bye” in week one thanks, in part, to state sanctions imposed on Ironton that eliminated the Tigers from post-season play.
Barnesville will host #5 ranked Portsmouth Trojans who invade Shamrock Stadium with an 8-3 record Friday night. Portsmouth’s three losses were to undefeated Unioto, powerhouse Coal Grove and Gallia Academy.
Portsmouth beat #12 ranked Amanda-Clearcreek last night, 32-12.
The Barnesville Game (7 p.m. kickoff) will be broadcast by AVC Communications’ WBNV Radio and YRPtv.
The other Belmont County team in action last night, St. Clairsville easily handled Pymatuning Valley, 35-13. In round two, they will face Garrettsville Garfield Friday night.
