Friday Night Lights Food Drive Winner Announced

Over the course of two weeks, Friday Night Lights organizations collected approximately 2000 items for the Barnesville Thrift Store & Food Pantry. Pet food was also donated to the Barnesville Veterinary. At one point, the top two organizations were separated by 2.47 points. The results of the competitive food drive were announced during halftime of the Barnesville Shamrocks vs Portsmouth Trojans football game.

  • Sixth Place: 7th & 8th Football
  • Fifth Place: JV & Varsity Football
  • Fourth Place: Little Rocks Football
  • Third Place: Junior High & High School Cheer
  • Second Place: Little Rocks Cheer
  • First Place: Marching Band

Marching Band Board member and parent Jessica Trudell organized the competition. Trudell said that she wanted to assist people struggling with food insecurity and other basic needs. She continued to share that she and her family have personal experience needing a hand up when times were hard. The food drive started with the marching band and quickly grew to include other organizations. Trudell expressed gratitude toward the other moms who assisted: Aimee McClelland Spangenburg, Brittany Marchetti, Misty Myers Bowman, Sarah Schilling, Tiffany Almaraz, Abby McClelland, Jennifer Cole, Rachel Leek, and Rebekah Detling.

The students collected the items in various ways. Some asked their families for donations. One student went door-to-door. Others solicited the local businesses to help. For example, Chestnut Lanes and the Woodsfield Savings Bank had collection boxes at their businesses.

The Women’s Club of Barnesville sponsored a band member, Aylah Strauss, to go shopping for items.

Issac Blon, even though his items were not tallied and scored, bought his donation to the game because he really wanted to help.

Since the organizations vary in size, Trudell and the other moms developed a multiplier system to equalize the competition so everyone had a chance to win.

“Thank you to the community for all your support. We look forward to doing this again next year, bigger and better,” said Jessica Trudell.
