During the days Jo Mott was the Barnesville correspondent for the Wheeling News-Register, the newspaper photographer snapped this photo of two Barnesville Elementary School students who were using one of the downtown snow piles to play on – in the middle of West Main Street nonetheless! The caption on the back of the photo simply states “School’s Out”.
Note the Garvin’s Dairy delivery truck parked along the street. The Wheeling-based firm came to Barnesville in the mid-1960s when they purchased the plant of the Barnesville Co-operative Dairy located on Mill Street.
The two buildings in the background were destroyed by fire in the spring of 1981. The one on the left was the original home of German immigrant Fred Mantz’s bakery before he built the remaining bakery building at 134 West Main. The less visible building on the right was Adelyne’s Beauty Shop owned and operated by Adelyne Williams.
