Officials Raid Local Pharmacy

It was anything but “business as usual” in downtown Barnesville this past Tuesday as officials of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Ohio Attorney General’ Office, Ohio Pharmacy Board, and Barnesville Police raided the Corner Pharmacy. A search warrant was executed at the time of the raid.

First reported by WTRF News, Martin Redd, Diversion Program Manager of the Detroit Field Division Office of DEA, said Charles “Chip” Terrett, the owner, voluntarily surrendered his DEA Registration Number. That means he can no longer sell controlled substances at the pharmacy.

A controlled substance is generally a drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession, or use is regulated by a government, such as illicitly used drugs or prescription medications that are designated by law.

During the raid, local customers of the business were turned away. At 5:30, officials were still in the agency collecting controlled substances. The pharmacy reopened Wednesday morning.

Final disposition of the case that remains open rests with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. At the present time the investigation continues.

Sadly, social media reports spread like wildfire with many opining on the raid, the business, and the owner. The most outlandish post suggested the raid was orchestrated by Barnesville officials who wanted to force the sale of the property so the village could demolish the structure for a parking lot!

In January this year, Christian Pharmacy Inc., doing business as the Corner pharmacy, marked 30 years of continuous operation in the village posting on Facebook:

Our business traces its roots back to 1893 when Giffin Drug opened in the building at 125 W Main Street where Chel’s salon is now located. Ray Ryman and I purchased Finnical Drugs from Bill Finnical in 1994 and began operations at 125 W Main on January 10, 1994. In July of 1997 we changed the name of the business to Ryman and Terrett Pharmacy using the blue and white capsule logo for the business. In October of 1997 we moved to 102 East Main St. site of the old K-V Store. We had a RadioShack franchise, Christian books, health foods and Sandy’s Crafts all located in the store. In 2008, I purchased Ray’s half of the business and he left to work at Genesis Health Care in Zanesville. In mid-2011 we ended our RadioShack franchise. Then in March of 2012 we moved to our current location at 102 W Main St and re-named the business Corner Pharmacy using the same blue and white capsule logo with the new name.
