The Kirkwood Township community of Sewellsville dates to 1819 when a Methodist Episcopal Church was established by early settlers.

For the community’s first 12 years, it was known as Union. In 1831 the community became known as Sewellsville after local citizen Peter Sewell became the town’s first postmaster. It has been known by that name since.

The post office at Sewellsville, like many other small rural outposts, was a victim of Rural Free Delivery (RFD) that was established by the federal government in the first decade of the 20th century. Local farmers no longer found it necessary to travel to town weekly to pick up mail, the rural route mailman delivering the mail six days a week to each farm. This dried up revenue for the small town post office and many, including Sewellsville, were closed.
