UL Grad Returns to Promote Music Careers

The Barnesville High School Chamber Band and Choir recently enjoyed listening to Word on the Street, a 10-piece Funk ensemble from Tiffin University (TU). The week-long tour, including six performances, gave TU the opportunity to recruit students for its music program and to allow the student band to showcase their learning and talents.

Caden McElroy, a guitar player in the band, is a Union Local graduate and a Flushing native.

According to Director of Bands Jonathan Head, McElroy was excited to show off his home county to his friends and bandmates.

McElroy’s mother works for Union Local and assisted Director Head with connecting and scheduling performances with local area schools with the goal of acquainting students with Tiffin University and its musical offerings. The group performed at Barnesville, Union Local and Bridgeport high schools.

Head noted that Tiffin University offers a commercial music degree, a rare program of study, especially in this region of the country. “Commercial music focuses on modern applications of music in the music industry, whether that is songwriting, recording, mixing, producing, mastering, or studio engineering.”

The Tiffin director encouraged a student interested in a music career “to immerse themselves.” For performers, that means students should participate in band, choir, and musicals to develop and hone their craft.

“Immersing themselves in the world of music and learning about what’s out there,” Head stated. “Listening to a lot of music and expanding their genres and tastes.”

Tiffin University is located in Tiffin, Ohio, approximately 55 miles southeast of Toledo in Seneca County. Founded in 1888, the private university enrolls approximately 3,700 students.
