Village Council Discusses Bucket Truck, Crosswalk and More at Meeting
At the Barnesville Village Council on July 13, all Council members were present, along with Mayor Hershberger. The next Village Council meeting will take place on July 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building.
Tlaquepaque Seeks D5 Liquor License
Attorney Jacob Leach was present and spoke on behalf of Tlaquepaque Mexican Restaurant. He explained that the business is seeking to acquire a D5 liquor license and needs council’s permission to proceed with the transfer of an existing license.
Leach explained: “Ohio only has a limited number of these licenses that they let out each year… There’s one in Newark that we’ve actually procured.”
A D5 liquor license would, among other things, allow for the sale of carryout alcohol. Leach explained that for Tlaquepaque, this meant that the business could start selling margaritas as part of their catering service.
The council voted on a resolution to allow Tlaquepaque to pursue the D5 liquor license and passed it 5-1 with Councilman Terry McCort, the dissenting vote. This resolution merely grants permission for Tlaquepaque to seek out the license and will not change the restaurant’s business practices until it is in place.
Crosswalk Planned for the Corner of Church and Chestnut
The Ohio Department of Development awarded the village a grant to help cover the cost of upgrading the traffic light and building a crosswalk at the corner of Church and Chestnut streets. The grant will cover $438,240 of the $585,000 estimated cost of the project. For more details, please read about the grant announcement covered by Barnesville Area News here.
The council passed the resolution to accept the grant on a 5-1 vote, with Mark Lucas dissenting.
Replacement Bucket Truck Discussed
With the Village’s current bucket truck permanently out of commission, the search for a replacement is underway. The bucket truck is used for tree trimming, replacing street light bulbs and installing streetlight decorations among other duties. Currently, the village rents a truck at the cost of $250 per use.
Village Administrator Roger Deal explained a $65,000 limit may be insufficient as most used bucket trucks in good condition go for around $70,000. Deal asked the council for permission to raise the spending limit to $75,000 in hopes the higher limit would make it easier to find a good truck. Council members unanimously approved increasing the limit as requested.
Other Business
Invoices submitted by the fiscal officer totaling $133,641.33, were approved.
The Mayor’s Court reported that a total of $2,668 was received in fines in the month of June. The state received $758.50, $28.50 went to the county and the remaining $1,881 was retained by the village.
Shelly and Sands was awarded the contract to pave selected village streets. The company was the lowest bidder for the project.
The village has purchased road salt for the winter through the ODOT Salt Bidding program purchasing 400 tons at $138.26 per ton for a total cost of $55,304.
