Charles LaFever

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles A. LaFever, 83, of Belle Rive, Illinois. Charles peacefully transitioned from this life on March 2, 2025, at Linda White Hospice House in Evansville, Indiana, with his devoted daughter, Michelle, by his side.

Born on October 13, 1941, Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Melba (Breeze) LaFever, whom he married on October 27, 1961. He was also preceded by his parents, Gilbert and Beulah (Vickers) LaFever, and his siblings, Willie LaFever, JC LaFever, Wilma Larson, Bobbie Sparks, and Naomi Pierce.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Charles will forever remember his deep love for his faith and his unwavering commitment to helping others. For many years, Charles and Melba opened their hearts and home to others by providing transportation for over 15 people each Sunday and Wednesday so they could attend church. There was something truly special about the sight of their truck gate opening, and the procession of people filing out, united by their shared journey of faith.

Charles leaves behind his cherished children, Michelle Vincent and husband, Brian of Tennessee, Brian LaFever and wife, Ellen of the Philippines, and Tracy Byrd and husband, Marlon of Michigan. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Chad Pfeffer and wife, Amy; Joshua LaFever; Katie LaFever and husband, Daniel; R.J. Ramos and wife, Katrin; Marielle Avery Ramos; Mary Yielen Ramos; Daniel Byrd; and Colette Byrd. His great-grandchildren, Lilianna and Rosemary Pfeffer, and Euno Ramos. He is also survived by his dear sister, Janet Thurston, along with many nieces and nephews.

Charles will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Yet, his legacy lives on in the hearts and stories of those who loved him. May his spirit continue to inspire kindness, compassion, and patience in all who remember him.

A Visitation will be held Friday, March 7, 2025 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
