Rocks Football Defeats Meadowbrook Colts 47-14
The Barnesville Shamrocks improved to 2-0 on the young football season with a win Friday night over the Meadowbrook Colts, who fell to 0-2.
In what would become a pattern throughout the game, Barnesville moved the ball at will on the opening drive, with Senior Trey Toliver leading the way with four runs for a total of 47 yards. A fumble at the goal line resulted in a 100+ yard scoop and score touchdown by the Colts’ Aiden Barnett. The point after put Meadowbrook up 7-0.
A failed onside kick attempt by the Colts left Barnesville with good field position to start their second drive. Junior Quarterback Evan Wells ran for 29 yards on two carries, and Toliver racked up another 43 yards on four carries, the last being a three-yard touchdown for his first of the evening. The point after was blocked, leaving the Colts up 7-6.
The Meadowbrook offense finally took the field with 5:57 left in the 1st quarter. A touchback on the kickoff and a personal foul had the Colts starting from their own 10-yard line. The Colts would punt after a quick three-and-out, topped off with a pass break-up on 3rd down by Senior Evan Carpenter.
After the short punt, the Rocks started in Colt territory at the 40-yard line. Wells, Toliver, and Carpenter teamed up for eight straight runs, with Toliver taking it in to put Barnesville in the lead. He then tacked on three more yards on the 2-point attempt, making it 14-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.
The Colts opened up the 2nd with an eight-play, 88-yard drive, ending with a touchdown pass from Junior Logan Guiler. The point after was good, tying the game at 14.
From there, Barnesville would take control, starting with a 1-yard touchdown run by Wells and topped off with a 2-point conversion pass to Sophomore Knoxx Mankin. Meadowbrook’s next drive ended quickly with an interception by Toliver. He would find the end zone two plays later, putting the Rocks up 28-14 at the half.
The Shamrocks would open the second half with another interception, this time by Senior Phoenix Graham, which would result in Toliver’s fourth touchdown.
After a Colt four-and-out, the Rocks would put together a nine-play, 51-yard touchdown drive, with Evan Carpenter punching the ball in from the 1-yard line, putting the Shamrocks up 41-14. Barnesville would grab another interception on the next drive, this time by Sophomore Bane Stephen.
The two teams would trade punts on their next possessions. Barnesville would finish off the game with one more touchdown, a five-yard run from Stephen, making the final score 47-14.
Unofficially, Toliver would end the game with 204 rushing yards, and Wells, in an impressive first varsity start at quarterback, passed for 72 yards and ran for an additional 93.
With the win, Barnesville retains the coveted Bill Dowler Trophy. The long-running trophy memorializes the late Bill Dowler, who served as varsity football coach at Barnesville and Meadowbrook.
The Shamrocks will host the 1-1 Bellaire Big Reds for their home opener at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 4, at Shamrock Stadium, while the Colts will travel to take on the 0-2 Cambridge Bobcats.
