Barnesville Football Defeats Monroe Central 48-6

The Barnesville varsity football team improved to 5-0 on the season Thursday night, defeating the Monroe Central Seminoles 48-6. The win gave the Shamrocks their eighth straight win in the series.

It would take just four plays for Barnesville to find the end zone on its first possession on a 62-yard touchdown run by Trey Toliver, which was later named the play of the game.

On Monroe Central’s ensuing drive, the Rocks would get the ball back on the second play after a forced fumble and recovery. Two plays later, Toliver was back in the end zone on a 24-yard run. With both PATs converted by Linas Graef, the Shamrocks were up 14-0 with less than four minutes gone in the game.

The Barnesville defense forced a quick three-and-out. A 38-yard pass from Colt Carpenter to Jaxten Swallie on the next Shamrock drive would set up Toliver’s third rushing touchdown of the game.

Monroe Central would gain a couple of first downs on their next possession, but a six-yard tackle for loss by Talon Anderson derailed the drive. The Rocks found the end zone again on the next drive, capped off with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Colt Carpenter to Evan Carpenter. Another Graef PAT would have the score at 28-0.

Barnesville scored on their next two possessions as well, first on a 24-yard scramble by Colt Carpenter on fourth-and-17, then on a 16-yard Toliver run. The first half ended with the Shamrocks up 42-0.

The second half moved quickly under OHSAA running clock rules, but the Rocks added to their total with a three-yard touchdown run by Mac Boroski. Monroe Central avoided the shutout as time expired with a one-yard touchdown run.

All told, Toliver rushed 14 times for 186 yards and four touchdowns. Graef would go a perfect 6-for-6 on PATs. The Shamrock defense came up big across the board, holding the Seminoles to just 60 total yards.

Barnesville will return to action next week when it hosts the Harrison Central Huskies, while Monroe Central will host the Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights.
