WVU Medicine Expands to PA, UPMC to Ohio
The West Virginia University Health System, headquartered in Morgantown, announced the system has expanded in western Pennsylvania with the addition of five hospitals.
Butler Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, Frick Hospital, Latrobe Hospital, and Westmoreland Hospital, as well as their affiliated physician practices and outpatient facilities, have officially joined WVU Medicine. Previously operating under the Independence Health System brand, the hospitals began operating under the WVU Medicine brand on October 1.
“This marks an exciting and important moment for these hospitals and the communities they serve as they join our network of care across the region,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said in a press release.
“We are grateful to the board members and leaders of these hospitals for placing their trust in us to build upon their success and create new opportunities for growth. We take that responsibility seriously.”
The WVU Health System has committed $800 million over the next five years to modernize the hospitals, including Butler Memorial Hospital’s emergency room and Westmoreland Hospital’s campus; grow clinical services; and expand access to high-quality care across the communities they serve.
In the region, WVU Medicine operates Barnesville, Harrison Community, Wheeling, Wetzel County and Reynolds Memorial hospitals. The system is also constructing a new community hospital east of St. Clairsville and a cancer treatment facility on the site of the former Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

Also announced on October 1 was that the Trinity Health System, headquartered in Steubenville, joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) system on October 1.
The deal, announced a little more than a year ago, is now complete, officials from the hospital, city and county officials and both hospitals said on Wednesday.
In 2025, Trinity opened the new St. Clairsville Community Hospital, a facility consisting of six inpatient beds for short-stay services, alongside a 10-bed emergency department.
Trinity facilities also include Trinity Hospital Twin City in Dennison and the main hub in Steubenville, consisting of the Trinity East and Trinity West campuses.
