A derecho storm visited eastern Ohio and areas from Chicago to Washington, DC on June 30, 2012.
Widespread wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph downed trees and power lines and damaged buildings. Electric service was out for days in many locations including suburban communities near Washington, DC.
One building that was a victim of the storm was the Somerton United Methodist Church where winds lifted the roof on the c.1873 historic brick church.
By October that year, it was determined the building was a financial total loss. When this photo was taken on October 18, the 134-year old community landmark was being demolished.
In time, the congregation raised enough funds for a new structure that was erected on the site.
