Summer Lunch Program Seeks Assistance

The Summer Lunch Program gears up to begin serving nutritious sack lunches on June 5th until late August. According to Jean Cooper, approximately 15,400 sack lunches were served last summer to children in Barnesville, Bethesda, Belmont, and Somerton. Cooper stated, “It took the combined efforts of the many financial contributions, 10-12 volunteers each day preparing sandwiches and filling bags, two faithful food buyers to make the weekly trips to Sam’s Club, and six- to eight-drivers a day to get the lunches to the children.”

The Summer Lunch Program is looking for volunteers to make sandwiches and to pack the lunches. Volunteers work each weekday from 9:30-11:00. Volunteers are welcome to work as many days as they want each week. The program is accepting donations of cookies, fruit snacks, small bags of chips, snack crackers, zip-lock bags, and grape jelly. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. If you would like to volunteer or make a donation, please contact Marie McCrate at (740) 425-1154, Kim Henderson at (740) 310-7867, or Diane Blattler at (740) 238-0250.
