Barnesville Baseball Team Reaches Ohio “Sweet 16”
The Barnesville Shamrocks will square off against Minford High School (Scioto County) next Thursday at the campus of Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, returning to the Sweet 16 playoffs for Division III for the first time since 2021.
Its opponent is Minford that defeated Barnesville’s perennial football playoff foe Wheelersburg Friday night by a score of 3-1 to claim their district crown.
“Its official…The Shamrocks will play the Minford Falcons in their Regional Semifinal game on Thursday May 30th at 5pm at Ohio Dominican University. Minford defeated Wheelersburg 3-1 tonight in their District final at Chillicothe.
“The last meeting between these two teams took place on June 5th, 2021, in a Regional Championship game at Beavers Stadium in Lancaster. On that day, the Shamrocks defeated Minford 10-7 to punch their ticket to the State Final Four.”
And, in tournament action this past week…
“Grit, Heart, and Determination were on full display tonight at Conotton Valley High School as the Shamrocks won their 22nd game of the season and claimed a District Championship. The Rox used a total team effort to defeat Sandy Valley 10-6 and punch their ticket to the Regional Tournament.
“Marshall Meade started and provided a gutsy performance by pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing only four hits while striking out 6. Dylan Blon (6-1) picked up the win in relief by pitching the final 2 2/3 innings allowing 2 hits while striking out 2 batters.
“Offensively, the Shamrocks pounded out 10 hits. Reese Stephen came up huge for the Rox with three hits and four RBIs. Max Miller, Caleb Powell, and Taison Starr (2 RBI) each contributed 2 hits apiece. Jaxon Wiley (2 RBI) added a hit. Aydon VanHorn added an RBI to the cause.
“The victory raises the Rox record to 22-6 on the season. They will play in a Regional Semifinal game on May 30th at Ohio Dominican University at 5 pm against the winner of the Southeast 3 District.”
Prior to the Sandy Valley win, Barnesville beat Garaway 3-1 at Zanesville on Monday to advance to the Finals.
“Jaxon Wiley (6-2) was tremendous on the mound scattering just 6 Pirate hits in a complete game effort. Wiley struck out 3 and walked 3 to earn the win.
