Georgia Marie (McCort) Gallagher
Georgia Marie (McCort) Gallagher, of Barnesville Ohio died peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Astoria Place on November 23, 2024 just days after gloriously celebrating her 95th birthday. Georgia now joins in heaven her beloved husband of 61 years, Henry, whom she married on April 19, 1958. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her children Linda (Armond) Olsen of Plainville, MA; Patricia (Alan) Logan of Cambridge, OH; Susan Gallagher of Millersburg, OH; and Scott (Lyn) Gallagher of Barnesville; her beloved grandchildren Olivia and Ajae Olsen; Nicholas (Destinee) and Cameron Logan; Sinjon (Michaela), Declan and Caelan Howell; Ryan (Chrissy) Gallagher, Kyle (Kristy) Gallagher, and Tiffany (Zach) Delman; and her precious great-grandchildren, Ryder, Parker, Nash and Nora Gallagher, and Leni, Tyce, and Lexi Delman.
Born on November 16, 1929, Georgia was the only child of George and Stella (McLaughlin) McCort of Malaga. Georgia’s father died when she was only 11 years old and her mom died in January of 1958, 3 months before Georgia and Henry were married. Georgia devoted her life to Henry and to raising their children with great faith and a generous heart.
Georgia loved her family more than anything and cherished the times when everyone could be together. Every occasion was one that included food. She was especially known for her high-rising Angel food cake, her melt-in-your mouth mints, homemade noodles and her delicious pies. Georgia graciously welcomed people into their home and loved sitting on the porch with friends drinking a glass of iced tea or a cup of chai. Georgia and Henry took great pride in their garden and their bounteous potato crops earned the couple the nicknames of Ma and Pa Tater.
Each Christmas her children and grandchildren received a special hand created present and she also found great joy in sharing her homemade gifts and delicious treats with others.
After raising her 4 children, Georgia began working alongside Henry at East End Garage until their retirement in 1998. She then worked from ages 70-85 as a Nail Technician, always gifting her customers with a special goody at their appointment. Georgia loved music and began taking piano lessons at the age of 50 and in her 80’s took up playing the mandolin and ukulele.
Georgia and Henry delivered Meals on Wheels to area residents for 17 years and were recognized in 1979 as Barnesville’s Citizens of the Year. She has been a member of the Church of the Assumption in Barnesville for 66 years and was an attendee at daily Mass. Georgia was a member of the Catholic Women’s club, the Belmont Grange, and a 4-H leader when her kids were young. She actively supported Henry during his 57 years of involvement with the Knights of Columbus. In 2017 she was recognized as the Belmont County Caregiver of the Year for her devotion and care to Henry as he was bedridden in the home.
Georgia loved talking with people at the grocery or in line at a store and greeted everyone by name with kindness, and a smile. She will be greatly missed.
The Gallagher family would like to thank Fr. Dave Cornett, Fr. Chet Pabin, the staff of Astoria Place, Guernsey Hospice, and Barnesville Hospital, and the numerous caring friends and relatives who visited, sent cards and prayed for Georgia during her stay at Astoria. Your thoughtfulness and kindness are greatly and forever appreciated.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 1st from 3 pm-7 pm at the Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church, 306 W. Main Street, Barnesville. A Vigil service will begin at 6:30 pm, led by Fr. Dave Cornett, followed by praying of the rosary. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, December 2nd at 10 am at the Assumption Church. Burial will be held at the Catholic Church Cemetery in Barnesville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Georgia’s memory to the Assumption Catholic Church (306 W. Main Street, Barnesville, OH 43713) towards a railing for the parking lot ramp or to the Barnesville EMS (127 E. Church St., Barnesville, OH 43713).
